You can monetize website traffic without AdSense by selling it to another ad network (display, native, popunder or direct link), by promoting affiliate offers, or by selling sponsorships directly. The right choice depends on how much traffic you have, where it comes from and how much of your page you are willing to give to ads. For most small sites the fastest start is a format that needs no ad slots at all, such as a direct link or a popunder.
On Adstean that start takes a few minutes: add your site, verify it and place your Direct Link. Every visit is sold in a live auction and credited to your balance. See how to monetize your website with Adstean; advertisers bid from 1.00 CPM.
Advertisers bid from 1.00 CPM; each visit is sold in a live auction.

The main ways to earn from traffic, compared
| Method | How you are paid | What it needs from your site | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display ad network | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) or per click | Ad slots in the layout | Takes space and slows the page if overused |
| Native / content recommendation | Per click, usually | A widget below or inside articles | Quality of the recommended content varies |
| Popunder | Per 1,000 impressions, set by auction | One script or link that opens a background window | Can annoy users if opened too often |
| Direct link | Per visit sold, set by auction | A link or button you control | Only earns when someone clicks it |
| Affiliate links | Commission per sale or lead | Content that recommends products | Zero income without conversions |
| Direct sponsorship | Fixed fee per placement or period | An audience a brand wants | You have to find and manage the sponsors |
These are not exclusive. Many sites combine affiliate content with one ad format. What matters is that the formats do not fight each other for the same user's attention.
Before you add anything: the AdSense rule
If you keep AdSense on some pages, read this first. Google's AdSense program policies say that Google ads may not be displayed in pop-ups or pop-unders, and that sites showing Google ads may not contain pop-ups or pop-unders that interfere with site navigation. In practice: do not mix a popunder with AdSense on the same page, or keep them on separate sections of the site, and never open a window that gets in the way of reading.
How monetizing with a Direct Link works on Adstean
- Create a publisher account. It is free and self-serve; the same account can also advertise.
- Add and verify your website in the Websites section, so the network knows the traffic is yours.
- Copy your Direct Link (it looks like adstean.com/entry?PID=your-id) from the Direct Link section.
- Place it where your visitors already click: as a popunder opened by your own code, behind a "download" or "continue" button, or as a normal link in a menu.
- Watch your statistics and withdraw. When your balance reaches the minimum of the payout method you choose, you request a withdrawal.
When a visitor opens your link, the network reads country and device, skips campaigns that person has already seen within their frequency window (24 hours by default), runs a second-price auction among the rest and sends the visitor to the winner. If no campaign matches, the visitor is redirected safely instead of seeing an error, so the link never breaks your site.
How much can a small site earn?
There is no honest fixed number, and be wary of anyone who quotes one without seeing your traffic. Earnings are impressions sold multiplied by the price the advertisers actually paid. Three things move that price:
- Country of your visitors. Some countries have many advertisers bidding, others very few.
- Device mix. Desktop and mobile visitors are often bought by different campaigns.
- Traffic quality. Real, engaged visitors keep advertisers buying; bots and incentivised clicks get a source excluded.
The formula is visits sold ÷ 1,000 × average price paid. A worked example of the arithmetic, not a promise: 10,000 visits sold in a month at an average price paid of 1.00 CPM bring 10.00; the price paid can be lower than the advertisers' bids, because the auction charges the second price. Our CPM, CPC and CPA guide shows how to convert between pricing models.
Mistakes we see publishers make
- Opening the link on every page view. Users leave, and you do not earn more because each campaign is capped per visitor anyway. Once per visit is enough.
- Buying cheap traffic to inflate earnings. Advertisers measure results; junk sources get excluded and the account is put at risk.
- Placing the link where browsers block new windows. If the window never opens, the visit never happens. Test it yourself on desktop and mobile.
- Mixing formats that conflict with AdSense on the same pages (see the rule above).
Frequently asked questions
Can I monetize a website with low traffic?
Yes. Formats paid per impression or per visit start earning from the first visitor; there is no traffic minimum to place a Direct Link.
Do I need ad slots in my design?
Not for a direct link or a popunder: neither takes space in the page layout.
Can I use more than one network?
Yes, as long as their formats do not overlap on the same page and you keep the total number of windows per visit low.
